funeral industry jobs

When families lose a loved one, a lot goes into making sure their bereavement is as compassionate as possible. Although working in a funeral home is an emotionally demanding job, it is incredibly rewarding for those looking to help others manage the pain of losing someone dear to them.

If you’re considering a career in the funeral industry, there are several options to choose from. Here are some of the most in-demand funeral jobs available, how much they pay, and how Stratford’s course in funeral service can help you launch your new career.

The Most in-Demand Funeral Industry Jobs

Since funerals are usually a large affair, there are many jobs in the industry that deal with different areas of the service. For example, some go to school to be morticians or embalmers.

However, there are also many people who simply help with setup and takedown arrangements at a funeral home. Here’s a look at some of the most in-demand jobs in the industry and what they do.

Funeral Attendants

Those who work as funeral attendants are usually responsible for the ins and outs of setting up a service.

This includes tasks such as:

Out of all the jobs in the funeral industry, this is perhaps the most common. Funeral attendants often work in teams to have everything setup in a timely, organized manner. In addition, they are usually the face of whatever funeral home they work at.

Funeral Directors and Arrangers

While the mortician sometimes handles communications with the family of the deceased, there are other positions that do so as well. This includes funeral directors, arrangers, and assistants.

Their duties include:

Other than serving as a point of contact, the funeral director also helps families decide on the type of burial for their loved one. For this reason, this position usually requires a great degree of empathy.

Funeral Home Managers

Often, funeral homes offer a suite of services for mourning families. They may have different options for caskets or cremation, as well as decorations or catering services.

For these types of funeral homes, the manager plays an important role. They coordinate all the different resources of the funeral home and set the prices of services. In essence, they are in charge of managing the entire facility.

What Makes Someone a Good Fit for Jobs in Funeral Service?

Due to the nature of working around the deceased and mourning families, funeral service isn’t for everyone.

However, there are a few different skills that are a good fit for this type of work, such as:

Talking with bereaved families is very difficult. For this reason, those who understand how to manage their own emotions, as well as understand the emotions of others, are the best fit for this career.

How Much Do Jobs in the Funeral Industry Pay?

The amount that funeral workers earn varies depending on their job title and experience. Generally speaking, those who manage funeral homes or services earn more.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for a funeral home manager is around $82,900, while the salary for an attendant is $31,630. However, these salaries also vary depending on location and education.

Do You Need Any Formal Education for Funeral Home Careers?

Whether you need a formal education in funeral services depends on the state you live in. Some states do not require you to have a degree or on-the-job training to start a career.

For example, the only requirements for jobs in the funeral industry in Colorado are that the applicant is over the age of 18, has a high school diploma or GED, and can pass a criminal background check. However, this is the only state where a degree or certification isn’t required.

In Florida, both funeral directors and embalmers must have a license. This is why it’s important to check the specific requirements in your state.
