One question that is asked all the time is, how much does a conservationist make? An average wildlife conservationist salary is about $60,000 per year

Keep in mind, a nature conservationist salary may be higher or lower depending on a variety of factors. Thankfully, there are some positions working with conservationists that require only a high school diploma as the minimum qualification.

If you love the outdoors and want to help preserve beautiful natural areas for generations to come, becoming a conservationist could be the perfect career choice for you.

Below we’ll detail some of the ways an environmental conservationist salary can be increased.

Considerations for a Conservationist Salary

There are many factors to consider when figuring out the salary you will make when working as a conservationist.

1. Your Education

No matter what, education is a large factor in determining a conservationist salary. Typically, to work as a conservationist, you need at least a bachelor’s degree. However, if you go back to graduate school and earn a master’s degree, you will earn a higher conservationist salary. You will even have more job opportunities available to you at places like government labs and research institutions, as well as management positions at state and national parks, when you obtain higher education.

2. Where You Work

Depending on where you live, the average conservationist salary in your area might be a little higher or lower. In areas with lots of protected wildlife or government-owned and preserved land, there is a higher need for conservationists. That is because more conservationists are needed when there are more natural wildlands that need to be looked after and cared for. Plus, in areas with less population, conservationists are in higher demand for their specific skill set.

3. Your Previous Experience

The more experience you have, the higher your earning potential as a conservationist will be. Conservation groups are always looking to hire an experienced candidate. So those with more experience will earn a higher conservationist salary and will have a better chance of finding a position as a conservationist.

If you are looking for ways to gain experience, check out additional training programs, certifications, and internships. These can be completed while you are in school or while you are working. Furthermore, any previous job experience that has you outdoors working with the environment will be great in helping you secure a job with a conservation group.
